The Inkwell and the Dagger is a short story appearing in The Lost Stories about Gilan tracking down Foldar after Halt's banishment.

Summary[]

As Halt left for Gallica after being banished, he told Gilan to hunt for Foldar, an ally of Morgarath.

After meeting with Crowley, Gilan concluded that a robbery in Highcliff Fief, a small fief which located on the coast, was the most likely lead. Upon arrival, he was immediately suspicious of Philip, the seneschal, who seemed to be hiding something. Baron Douglas was dismissive of the possibility of Foldar's presence, believing it to be the work of simple bandits.

After speaking with Maeve, Gilan discovered that Phillip had formerly ran up a gambling debt and had been visiting the village at night. As he returned to Castle Highcliff, he was ambushed by two crossbowmen. While the two searched for his body, Foldar approached and berated the two for wasting time.

Gilan followed Phillip through the village at night, as he took a sack of money back to the castle. Later that day, Gilan revealed his plan to capture Baron Douglas--a double bluff involving the tax convoy. Gilan arranged for six archers to wait for him on the road.

When the bandits attacked the convoy, they were ambushed by the archers. Folder fled the scene, chased by Gilan. After a brief battle, Gilan knocked him off his horse and killed him.

Back at the castle, Gilan revealed the true plan to Baron Douglas, claiming Phillip to be the informant. After Phillip revealed how he was repaying his debt, Gilan then revealed that the informant was actually Baron Douglas. Douglas was taken prisoner, to be brought to Castle Araulen to be tried for his crimes.
