One-Eyed Jem was a criminal highwayman based in Redmont Fief who served as part of Barton 'Bearkiller's brigand group. Though no illustration has been given to Jem's physical appearance apart from the fact he is blond-haired, it can be assumed he either possesses only a single working eye or covers one of his eyes for reasons unknown.
History[]
At some point in time, Jem joined the brigand, Barton the 'Bearkiller', and became a member of the so-called 'Bearkiller's raiding band. Alongside two other bandits — Donald and Walter Scar — Barton and Jem eventually began to operated within Redmont Fief's borders. The band gained some notoriety in the fiefdom for attacking and taking advantage of not just small defenseless villages and farmers returning from and going to the market, but also multiple elderly men, all of whom had been outnumbered four to one and became responsible for half a dozen beatings, all of which had left their victims bruised and bleeding. However, the gang only preyed on isolated victims, and, if the victim in question was travelling in groups or guarded, the band would allow their intended victims to pass unhindered, as, though their leader might display himself as a fearless bear killer, Barton was not willing to risk his neck in a confrontation with experienced armed men.
The Missing Prince[]
Jem and his comrades atrocities eventually reached the ears of Will Treaty, causing the Ranger and his apprentice, Madelyn Altman, to set out to capture the brigands and bring them before Baron Arald's court for trial.
One day, the bandit gang watch a farmer's cart ladened with produce from the tree line, Jem watching from an unknown location. As the cart disappears from outlaw's sight, Jem and Walter follow their leader's decision to relax on the soft grass as they wait for midafternoon to set in. As the sun begins setting, the farm cart the bandits had watch make its way to the market returns, once again under the brigands gaze. As the cart disappears from view in a small dip in the road, Barton gestures hurriedly at Jem and Walter, ordering them across the road. Not pointing out to their leader that that they did not require instructions, having performed similar actions at least a dozen times, Jem, wielding a homemade spear, and Walter, crouching low as they scurried across the narrow track and conceal themselves behind a bush on the road's other side.
After the 'farmer' (actually Will Treaty is disguise) is threatened by Barton and his bearskin cap is pinned to a tree by an arrow shot by Maddie, Barton summons Jem and Walter, who burst from the shrubbery concealing them and started back across the road, brandishing their weapons. However, seconds after revealing themselves, an arrow shot by Madelyn transfixes itself in Jem's left calf, bringing him down as the bandit rolls on the ground in agony and clutching the arrow piercing through his calf, incapacitating him from the brief skirmish. After constraining the gang leader, Will approaches a unconscious Walter and Jem, who was sitting up, clutching his leg where Madelyn's arrow had passed through his left calf's muscle, protruding on the other side, which ironically blocks the flow of blood, moaning in pain. Unsympathetic to Jem's pain, Will thumb cuffs Jem and halls the criminal to his feet. Whimpering at Will's deduction that the arrow implanted in his calf will have to come out, Jem pleadingly asks if the Ranger can't just leave him there to fetch a healer, promising to make no attempt to escape. After Maddie displays a lack of sympathy to the pain Jem would experience if Will did not break the arrow shaft, Will comments to Jem of the cruelty of young people before swiftly snapping the arrow shaft and pulling the arrow through the wound in the same motion, sending a bolt of pain through Jem's leg that nearly causes it to give way while Jem blanches from the pain. After Will briskly bandages Jem's around the arrow wound, Jem hobbles two steps forwards in pain. Resolving that the pain would make Jem no threat, Will removes Jem's thumb cuffs and has the blond bandit swing his left arm around Barton's shoulders for support.
After capturing Donald, Will and Maddie proceed to make their way to Willow Bend Village. The length of time the journey took was prolonged by Jem and Barton, attempting to keep in step with each other's, shuffling gait. A kilometre from the gang's hut, Jem pleads to Will to be allowed to ride in the farmer's cart, his face as brightening as Will agrees they could, only to fall as the Ranger informs him that he is not going to. Upon arriving at Willow Bend, Jem and his comrades are taken to the town jail to await trail at Castle Redmont, although Will informs the town constable that he should have Jem sent to the village apothecary to have his wound properly cared for, which the constable obeys. Will also advises the constable to use the gang for any unpleasant tasks around the village, which were apparently plentiful. It can be assumed that the bandit gang were set to completing these unpleasant tasks until they were escorted to Redmont for court.
