Erak Starfollower, who the faction plotted against
The Anti-Erak Faction is a small group of Skandians located in Hallasholm that were mentioned in Erak's Ransom. Founded and previously lead by Jarl Toshak, who used the executed Skirl, Slagor, as a martyred figurehead to gather together Skandians displeased with the current ways of power in order to further his goal of replacing Erak Starfollower as Oberjarl, the group plotted to unseat Erak and have Toshak elected as the new leader of Skandia. The faction's cause and possibly its numbers were strengthened even more by the displeasure that some felt at Skandia's new treaty with Araluen that discouraged raids on their former favourite target. It is currently unknown if any members of the faction were collaberators that were involved with Slagor's plot to betray Hallasholm to the Temujai (although Toshak was confirmed to have not been present during the Battle of Hallasholm).
Vocal and persistent in their goal, despite their small numbers, the faction conspired to depose Erak and set up Toshak as the new leader of the Skandians, which, had the faction succeeded, would have possibly resulted in Skandia breaking the treaty and re-continuing the formerly common raids on Araluen. Apart from their leader, Toshak, no members of the faction have been named, although its members presumably are least partially consisted of members of Slagor's crew and the traitorous Skirl's old cronies and followers. The faction may have also consisted of individuals tied with the two Skirls who had plotted with Slagor to assist Temujai or close relatives of Slagor and his crew and followers who either shared their dislike of the Oberjarl or (if they were relatives of Slagor or his two fellow traitors) wanted revenge for their relatives either incarceration (the fates of Slagor's two fellow traitors is unconfirmed) or execution.
Eventually, the fraction, knowing that should Erak simply be killed, it would just lead to one of Erak's closest friends being elected Oberjarl, arranged for Erak to be given a false schedule for when the caravans were coming to empty the Khadif's coffers at Al Shabah, and then organised for a smuggler to tip off the Wakir to the fact that Erak was coming in order to have Erak captured and held for high ransom. During the time it would have taken for the ransom to be paid, Toshak and his high-ranked followers planned to start a whispering campaign against Erak, planting doubt in the hearts of others about Erak's suitability to be leader, turning more Jarls and Skirls against Erak and sowing dissent among their countrymen, culminating with Toshak's election as Oberjarl, as he was the head of the opposition party. The party later paid for Erak to be abducted by the Tualaghi in order to prevent the ransom from being paid. The plan failed in the end however, and resulted in Toshak's death.
It is unknown what became of the Anti-Erak faction after the events of Erak's Ransom, but, without a leader to rally around, they might have dissolve, destroyed or went underground in fear of prosecution. It is also possible, that, upon his return, Erak might have arrested many, if not all, of the faction's members and either imprisoned or executed them, as all seemed to be at peace with Skandians at the time of The Outcasts.
